The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has indicated that the protracted political tensions in Rivers State may soon be resolved following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.
Wike spoke to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects in the FCT. He attributed the de-escalation of the crisis to the president’s timely and decisive mediation between key actors in the state’s executive and legislative arms.
Expressing optimism about the outcome of the meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Wike said he believes the situation has reached a turning point.
“I believe that, by the grace of God, this will be the last time the president will be bothered with this issue and the last time the people of Rivers State will witness this kind of discord,” he stated.
He underscored the significance of the president’s role as a unifying national leader, noting that Tinubu’s counsel carries authority that all parties are expected to respect.
“The president is the father of the nation, and when he speaks, it is incumbent on all parties to act in ways that promote peace and progress,” Wike added.
Wike expressed confidence that both Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly would act in accordance with the understanding reached during the presidential meeting.
“The House of Assembly will fulfill its responsibilities, and I am confident that the governor will also take the necessary steps to ensure that this peace is sustained,” he said.
He emphasized that the priority now should be stability, governance, and development in Rivers State, rather than continued political disagreements.
The political crisis intensified after the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, a move widely perceived as deepening divisions within the state’s political leadership.
In response, President Tinubu convened a meeting on Monday with both Wike and Fubara at the Presidential Villa to broker reconciliation and restore calm.
Wike concluded by expressing appreciation for the president’s efforts in facilitating dialogue and promoting unity.
“The most important thing is for Rivers State to move forward. We are grateful to Mr. President for his commitment to ensuring that we reach this understanding,” he said.
The development is widely seen as a positive step toward restoring political stability and enabling the state government to refocus on governance and service delivery.
